Math skills are an important and useful part of everyday life. In fact, everyone needs math in their daily life. Math is a tool that will help make our life smoother. Hence, it is pertinent to note how Math applications are used from the time we wake up in the morning till we sleep at night. Some daily tasks for which math is important are managing time, budgeting, cooking, driving and more.
In school, Math problems become more complex as the grade level progresses. Meaning, basic math was taught as early as kindergarten. Principles which includes basic number concepts such as whole numbers, skip counting, place value, rounding, and fundamental operations like addition, subtraction and multiplication were taught during primary grades. These foundation skills are so important as you will still be using it all through your life.
Yes, basic math skills help you to solve general math problems in your life, like in managing your finances, paying bills, or stuff like buying basic commodities.
On the other hand, it may seem that Math is very difficult because it takes time and energy. Most learners in school don’t experience sufficient time to fully understands their math lessons, and later, fall behind as their teacher moves on. Because of this, such learners move on to study more complex concepts with a shaky and weak foundation.
Accordingly, if these foundations of mathematics were not mastered, and such building blocks of mathematics not developed, learners would definitely struggle in making necessary connections or fully understand higher level mathematical concepts. Study shows that mastering elementary level mathematics before learning complex math lessons like algebra increases students’ chances for success when taking the course.
Needless to say, it’s indeed time to understand the importance of these fundamentals or let’s say the entire math subject and enjoy the beauty of it. And though math is itself a unique subject, we are most likely be surprised to know that it forms the base of another subject. History, Home Economics, and Sciences, in fact; every subject is based upon math.
Math fundamental skills therefore, should be embraced and mastered by everyone in all walks of life as it makes our living much easier and better. Why not start loving it?
