Learning to read and write are two skills that an individual need to be developed as he/ she grow older. They are both heavily related in language learning. It said that, the more you read and write, the more you broaden your vocabulary and are able to communicate effectively to others.
There are many benefits of reading and writing. Reading builds knowledge that allows us to be the inquisitive knowledge seekers. Moreover, reading well also allows one to spend less time figuring out the words, and it increases speed and concentration. Further, reading provides a model for writing. Thus, helps also in improving our writing skills.
On the other hand, just like reading, writing also has many found advantages. It improves our memory, builds vocabulary, and even refines our communication skills.
Therefore, writing and reading are related. Both help students build their vocabulary. It has shown that when students receive writing instruction, their reading fluency and comprehension most likely improved.
However, the process of writing is more complex as it also improves a student’s ability to recall information, make connections between different concepts, and synthesize information in new ways.
And since, the ability to write neatly on paper is an important skill also that one must learn to develop. Children are taught to print letters, and in some in cursive form as soon as they reached the third grade.
On the other hand, according to studies, to transfer learning effectively, one must possess strategies or approaches that will work out especially in teaching reading. Some strategies or approaches that are widely used are the Fuller Approach.
Fuller approach is introduced as a method for reading and writing the English Language by developing the learners’ phonemic awareness to identify and manipulate phonemes in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and spelling patterns.
Surprisingly, learning how to write better and faster is also possible once you combine learning reading to learning writing using this approach
In the end, the most important to remember is that the automatization of reading and writing skills is essential. That students benefit most when instruction is direct and explicit, and sufficient review and practice are provided.
