We envision a world in which education positively contributes to each person’s ability to reach their potential in acting for society’s good.
This is the DepEd’s Vision for our students. DepEd envisions to produce holistically developed individuals with the right knowledge, skills, and values that would contribute to the good of the society. One of which is Supreme Pupil Government (SPG). It was mandated to be able to give the pupils an avenue where they can exercise their rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities as provide by the Constitution. Their role in the school to work with the school administration, clubs and other organizations for the welfare and development of the pupils and the school gives them a chance to become better at honing their leadership skills.
As an adviser of the Supreme Pupil Government, there are countless times that I have seen these young learners were able to enhance their social awareness and promote social consciousness among pupils while initiating projects and activities that are beneficial to the pupil and school.
Even at a young age, these elementary pupils were provided opportunities to become a good leader through understanding the basic principles and ideals of a participative democracy. Teaching them that everyone has a voice that could be heard if one stands up for their rights.
To be part of the SPG, it equips our pupil to develop essential skills that will help them become good and responsible leaders even at a young age. Let us not forget that these learners are guided by their teacher-advisers of these institutions within the school. Their participation in the SPG gives them a platform to collectively apply their lessons learned from their various subject into real-life situations where they could learn better and become a responsible member of the community.
Being able to contribute to a significant change in our schools, families, and communities, our young leaders are empowered more to innovate, become problem-solvers and critical thinkers. Find solutions to problems which confront our community like social, environmental problems.
The school association with the purpose to train pupils to become better citizens in the future and to develop the pupils’ skills and capabilities in achieving quality education and academic excellence through cooperation among themselves – that is SPG. Not every student in a school is being given a chance to become part of this organization; however, these young student-leaders’ initiative and desire to become agents of change is worthy to be mentioned.
To become a true leader means being of service to others. As Israelmore Ayivor – an author quoted: “A young child is a leader to an elderly person once his purpose has a faithful, sincere and trustworthy influence on people. Leadership is not restricted to position and age; it is self-made and influential. Everyone has this self-leadership quality.” May our young leaders continue to work towards their goal and become the next leaders of our nation.
