Ever-increasing stress and stressors among Filipinos emanating from economic pressures, working stress, and personal stressors have become one of the issues of public health concern. As anxiety and depression increase, as hypertension rises, specialists encourage the population to seek better ways to tackle stress. With the present issues that beset our country and the challenges of a fast-paced life that constantly puts people under strain, there is no question that the need for stress management that is easy and effective has never been greater than now.
The Escalating Stress Crisis
A recent survey conducted by the Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) in 2024 revealed that over 70% of Filipinos experience high levels of stress regularly. Economic challenges, job insecurity, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are among the primary contributors. Additionally, the survey found that stress-related health problems, including anxiety disorders, depression, and cardiovascular issues, have significantly increased in the past year.
The Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) conducted a survey last 2024 and it showed that more than 70% of the population of the Philippines sustains high stress levels often. Lack of resources in the economy, job insecurity, and the continuation of the effects of COVID-19 are some reasons. Also, the survey indicated that stress-related health complaints such as anxiety disorders depression, and cardiovascular diseases have also risen in the previous year.
Workplace Stress: A Major Contributor
Stress at the workplace is a major determinant of general stress in the Philippine population. The change of working from home during the pandemic situation and then going back to the hybrid or full physical working environment has blurred the working time and non-working time. Due to the terrible work conditions, most employees have lost hope and direction in their workplace; this includes long hours of work, unattainable targets, and insecurity.
“I’ve been working longer hours than ever before, and it’s taking a toll on my health,” said Mark Santos an IT working in Makati from San Pablo Laguna. “Even when I’m home, I can’t stop thinking about work. The stress is constant, and it’s affecting my sleep and overall well-being.”
That being said, while there has been emerging awareness about the adverse effects of workplace stress, few organizations have offered proper psychological assistance to their employees. Whereas some companies have implemented some of the installation of wellness programs, counseling services, and stress management workshops are not common yet. Thus, many adults remain exposed to stress at work as they lack sufficient assistance in dealing with it.
The Importance of Effective Stress Management
Chronic stress is a known risk factor, which is why professionals underline the necessity to prevent burnout. Some of the prevention methods include engaging in moderate exercises, doing meditation, getting enough rest/ sleep, and having a good work-life balance. More so, friends and family, as well as therapists, can be a source of comfort and assist people in changing their problematic ways of managing stress.
“Managing stress is essential for both mental and physical health,” commented Dr Mendoza. “It’s not just about avoiding stress but learning how to respond to it in healthier ways. This can prevent burnout, improve overall well-being, and enhance the quality of life. Unfortunately, many Filipinos either don’t prioritize stress management or don’t know where to start.”
Government and Community Initiatives
In response to the growing stress epidemic, the Department of Health (DOH) and various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have launched initiatives aimed at promoting mental health and stress management. These efforts include public awareness campaigns, free counseling services, and community-based wellness programs. However, experts argue that more needs to be done to reach vulnerable populations, especially those in rural areas with limited access to mental health resources.
Conclusion
With the increase in stress experienced by the Philippines’ populace, the need for more efficient stress control can no longer be overemphasized. Using the right tools and the help of other people, it is possible to manage stress so that your mental and, consequently, your physical condition improves. In the next steps therefore, it can be seen that there must be increased partnership between the government as well as various business entities and communities in place so that all Filipino citizens can get the resources they need to deal with life issues.
The message is clear: stress has become an emerging epidemic that if addressed early, and effectively, Filipinos can be saved from the adverse effects and hence live a healthier life.
