Poor in Math? Having hard time in solving simple math problem? Mathematics educators are troubled because most of pupils today dislike and have a great fear in numbers. Students’ performances are greatly affected. Mathematics is the foundation of computer science. Mathematics is also the only language shared by all human being regardless of culture, religion and gender. Pi is still 3.14159 regardless of where you are in. Adding up the cost of a full basket of groceries involves the same process, so why is it hard to our pupils today to solve simple problem they encounter?
Children most often hate math because of their fear in failing. The confidence is affected because of their repeated mistakes, and they lose interest in math. Pupils reluctantly hate math is their lack of understanding and self-perception of low content knowledge. It can stem from various factors such as past negative experiences, a lack of confidence in one’s abilities, fear of failure or societal pressure. Math anxiety can lead to avoidance of math related activities, lower self-esteem and reduced motivation to learn.
To cure this scenario the Department of Education issued Deped Order No. 13 s. 2023, Adoption of the National Learning Recovery Program in the Department of Education. Anchored on the MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa agenda, is to strengthen the learning recovery and continuity program of the department, improve numeracy and literacy and accelerate the achievement of the education targets. There shall be five subprograms under NLRP that shall help bridge the learning gaps among the learners. There are; National Leaning Camp (NLC), National Reading Program (NRP), National Mathematics Program (NMP), National Science and technology Program ( ( NSciTP ) and other programs implemented by the Central Office and field Offices that support learning recover efforts.
The NMP aims to drive collaborative action to promote better numeracy and mathematics learning in schools across all grade levels. Specially efforts under the NMP shall be geared towards improving shared understanding of numeracy and its critical connections with mathematics and the real world. Increasing system wide capacity to implement key principles in developing numeracy and mathematics skills, increasing the availability of broad and reliable data on numeracy and mathematics progress and achievement.
NMP is included in the schedule of pupils, aside from their mathematics subject. The program begins with a rapid assessment phase for all learners will participate in NMP. This assessment will be the teacher’s basis on where the skills and knowledge are do the pupils have and it will gauge learner’s current mathematical abilities based on the MELC (Most Essential Learning Competencies) and identify their strength and weaknesses. After the assessment pupils will be categorized if they need Intervention, consolidation or Enhancement. Grouping pupils based on specific skill weaknesses those deficiencies but may have some trade – offs in other skill areas. Overall NMP provide targeted support and improvement in pupils numeracy skills. and performance in Math. Pupils will be given activities suited to their needs. In this matter the fear in Math will be conquer and our pupils will equip and ready to answer different mathematical problems that they will encounter in their life. Numeracy skills will help our pupils in their cognitive development, allowing them to understand mathematical concepts, think logically and improve their knowledge and confidence.
