Before this year’s Paris Olympics, the Philippines had 1 gold medal. Now there are three. Thanks to Carlos Yulo who made history in sports as he won not just one but two gold medals for Gymnastics Floor Exercise and Gymnastics vault events.
Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo who represented the Philippines in this year’s Paris Olympics was born on February 16, 2000 in Malate, Manila. He has been representing the Philippines since 2018. His coach is Aldrin Castañeda and his former coach is Munehiro Kugimiya.
While it is true that other popular sports like basketball and volleyball receive better audience and financial support than those sports like weightlifting and gymnastics that bring gold in the world stage like the Olympics, I don’t think that we must lessen the support that we have in basketball and volleyball just because these sports don’t translate gold in the Olympics. If we really want to support other sports outside of basketball, then maybe the recent Olympic gold wins can be the start for Pinoy sports fans to buy more tickets so that people will show up to these events and in return it can get more media mileage with events like Palarong Pambansa and other international competitions.
We all want support for our Filipino athletes without bringing others down. Besides, they all wave the flag of our only one country, weather they wear leotards, tank tops, or jerseys. We can celebrate their victory that brought pride to our nation without bringing others down.
