Modular Distance Learning Challenges in Science Academic Motivation among Indigenous People (IP) Grade 11 Students

Abstract
The Department of Education in the Philippines implemented the new K to 12 Curriculum which started in the school year 2012-2013 by virtue of the Republic Act 1033 or the Enhanced Basic Education 2013.
Science as one of the focus subject areas in the K to12 curriculum has been viewed as venue for honing students’ talents obtained through various learning activities (Cabansag, 2014) and the new science program has many innovations in terms of the arrangement of competencies, integration of each branch of science in every grade level, mode of instruction, and learning pedagogies (Montebon, 2014).
During the emergence of Pandemic in 2020, the education in the Philippines is one affected and in an effort to assist young learners’ success in learning, and to cease the harmful effects of these extended school closures, the Department of Education (DepEd) has implemented its Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) for the Academic year 2020-2021. In adopting precautionary measures for public health and Modular Distance Learning` it is reasonable to suspect that academic outcomes and, more precisely, students’ achievement motivation, could also have deteriorated. In fact, some research findings suggest that when individuals are struggling with mental health symptoms, they tend to also exhibit poor motivation toward learning.
Daraetan Integrated School Senior High School researchers conducted this study to contribute to the teaching -learning approach   that may value positive effects on multiple dimensions of learning in Science including interpersonal and achievement – related behavior.  This study aimed to identify issues to alleviate the challenges in Modular Distance learning to Indigenous People (IP) Grade 11 students.
The instrument used in assessing the modular Distance Learning challenges in Science academic motivation of IP students was survey design questionnaire.
The majority of the respondents are male with a frequency of 17 or 70 percent while there are only 13 or 43 percent of male of the population. Majority of parents’ educational attainment were High School graduate and implies the fact that this is one of the challenging aspect the student respondent encounters. The geographical location where the respondents’ place of study is also considered as factor of challenges to the respondents where findings revealed that  lack of  quiet place, enough lighting and privacy are factor of challenges. The participants of the study with 7 household members or more living in the same house has an important concern with the family economic status with monthly range income of P3, 000.00- P5, 999.00 also proposes one of the Modular Distance learning challenges among the student respondents. The perception of the students in the content of Self Learning Modules in Science subject were also noted as Modular Distance Learning challenges as the following aspects were emphasized:  Respondents Have difficulty in understanding the discussions in Science topics, in analyzing the content in the Science modules, difficulty in applying Content of the Science Modules with Written works and Performance Task as well as the Learners Packet consist of numerous Learning Tasks.
As to the Academic Motivation in Science Subject where Goal Orientation is important , the respondents strongly agreed to give more time on Priorities in studies over household work, Plan to finish Senior High School and the determination to pursue and overcome stress .The use of Learning resources is given emphasis to the perceived value of learning in the Academic Motivation where the Availability of  cellphones, tablet, laptop for research,; Availability of Internet connection and Availability of Textbooks, journals for Reference are essential aspect of learning resources.
The  Interpersonal communication which marked as significant in the Academic motivation of the students where the respondents strongly agreed on The importance of Presence of Parental/ Guardian support  during your study time and Electronic and the use of  Gadgets  as essential during Modular Distance learning.  Respondents’ Plan to finish College was also considered as academic motivation.
This findings of this research can also promote positive ideas to protect Indigenous People (IP) from eventual decline in academic motivation in Science subject.
Teachers play a vital role in leaners lives. The said intervention program has an impact as their reading comprehension skills improved through rigorous monitoring and supervision of the teachers.
