In 2018, Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) released its results wherein the Philippines scored the lowest in reading comprehension among the 79 participating countries.
It was also reported that on February 2020 there were alleged number of 70,000 nonreaders identified in the Bicol region.
With these reports, there’s seems to have a problem regarding the reading level of our students that need to address seriously.
In today’s time, it is difficult for children to survive in his life. If children don’t learn to read during his early years, if they fail to comprehend and communicate well with others, if it’s difficult for them to write, then its going to become a great challenge for them as they go on with their lives.
Beginning reading serves a vital foundation that enable individual to learn things. It’s like a first doorway that leads to a vast of opportunity in one’s life. If beginning reading did not happen during child early years the foundation of learning need to emphasis.
Compare to non-readers, students who can read and comprehend show self-confidence. They can easily engage in the classroom discussion, performances and participations. It is also evident that readers perform well in class with regards to written task than to non-readers.
When children learn to read during early age, they established a love for learning that leads to more positive results. They can good grades, they can gain more knowledge and information, they can converse well with fluency and sense, they can understand more and the limitation to never ending learning will follow.
Maybe in the near future we no longer hear negative news about the reading comprehension of the Filipino learners. Maybe in the near future we will eliminate the number of non-readers and turn them into readers, that will serve our country for the generations to come.
