Being a teacher goes beyond acquiring the competence and knowledge to deliver rigorous academic instruction to a diverse group of pupils. And I think that good teacher possess a multitude of qualities making them unique and unforgettable to the children they serve. I believe that teachers are passionate, inspired, creative, compassionate, patient and understanding. They take the time to know their pupils and know them well. They appreciate what attributes to each child’s story and take ownership of their role in the child’s life for that school year. I feel that I have the skills and attributes of a teacher like this because of the pride I take in the love and support I show to pupils. I know teachers have the power to make a lasting difference and I start every year with that mindset. I aspire to make a big difference in the lives of little people. I’m saying this because this was very first year of teaching Intermediate Grade, Grade 6 I mean.
Addressing my pupils’ needs using a variety of assessment tools has been a beneficial practice to help guide instruction. My grade 6 pupils have different learning styles and their strengths and weaknesses are not always apparent using the same methods of assessment. Utilizing formative, standards(goal)-based, anecdotal records every time they made informal and actions that made me feel bad as their adviser , observational and benchmarks has driven my instructional programs. The combination of different assessments provides me with a multi-dynamic perspective of my pupils allowing me to better understand their strengths, weakness and academic needs.
My relationship with my pupils in the classroom is a positive relationship I guess between the teacher and the pupils in efforts to gain trust and respect from each other. The relationship we built may consist of getting to know them better, providing choice and encouraging them to become stronger everyday.
I might say that I am lucky enough having them in my life. This is my sweet journey being a teacher.
